A role tree having nodes corresponding to semantic roles in a hierarchy is defined. A posting list is generated for each association of a term and a semantic role in the hierarchy. The posting lists are stored contiguously on a physical storage medium such that a subtree of the hierarchy of semantic roles can be loaded from the storage medium as a single contiguous block. The posting lists for a subtree of the hierarchy are retrieved by obtaining data identifying the beginning location on the physical storage medium of the posting lists for the term at the top of a desired subtree of the hierarchy and data identifying the length of the posting lists of the desired subtree of the hierarchy. A single contiguous block that includes the posting lists for the desired subtree of the hierarchy is then retrieved from the beginning location through the specified length.

Initially, content of document(s) is accessed and semantic representations are derived by distilling linguistic representations from the content. These semantic representations may be stored at a semantic index. Also, a proposition is derived from the query by parsing search terms of the query, and distilling the proposition from the search terms. Typically, the proposition is a logical representation of the conceptual meaning of the query. The proposition is compared against the semantic representations at the semantic index to identify a matching set. Regions of the content within the document, from which the matching set of semantic representations are derived, are targeted. Accordingly, highlighting may be applied to the targeted regions when presenting or displaying the search results.

Methods and apparatuses for decomposing a business metric based on a plurality of activities and a response model are described. In one embodiment, the method accesses the response model and the plurality of activities, the plurality of activities each having a reference and executed value. The method computes a contribution to the business metric based on setting one of the plurality of activities to one of the corresponding reference and executed value and setting the other activities to the value state opposite of that activity. Furthermore, the method computes each of the contributions independent of the response model type.

A method, system and computer-usable medium are disclosed for initiating a session in a virtual world. An instant messaging system (IMS) comprises a registry of IMS user identifiers cross-referenced to their corresponding virtual world user identifiers. Techniques and tools are described for flattening nested streams. For example, a stream flattening tool processes nested streams on a stack to traverse the nested streams. The tool produces a flattened stream that enumerates the elements of the nested streams. In one embodiment, the tool initially pushes a stack frame onto the stack for a stream representing all of the nested streams. As the tool iterates across the “active” stream having the frame on the top of the stack, the tool may encounter and produce elements in the “active” stream. Or, the tool may encounter a nested stream and push a stack frame for the nested stream onto the stack, then continuing by iterating across the new active stream. The tool pops the stack frame for the active stream from the stack when the end of the stream is reached, or potentially earlier if handling a nested tail stream.
