The First Spark Meetup in the World
The first Spark meetup began in a San Francisco room on December 12, 2011. Fifteen years later, its recordings show the starting point of a worldwide developer community.
On December 12, 2011, Alexy Khrabrov hosted Matei Zaharia at the Scala for Startups meetup at Klout in San Francisco. The recording is now preserved in the Spark 1 playlist, a set of rediscovered talks from the first Scala for Startups and Spark Users meetups.

Matei's first Spark talk was not yet a keynote in a global ecosystem. It was a room, a whiteboard, a practical explanation of dataflow and resilient distributed datasets, and a famous Berkeley-versus-Stanford demonstration over Wikipedia. The questions that followed made the idea tangible: a new way to make cluster computing feel composable, interactive, and close to the developer.
Alexy had founded Scala for Startups and later merged it with SF Scala. After hosting Matei, he proposed a new Bay Area Spark Meetup, which they co-founded. In that sense, the first event is more than an early date in a timeline. It is the ancestor node for the meetups, talks, recordings, and developer conversations that came after it, including the OSS strategy for all the Spark companies that came later.
The playlist includes Matei's original Spark design talk, the Berkeley-versus-Stanford demo, questions from the room, and talks from early adopters. It was found and uploaded fifteen years later, giving the graph a rare before-and-after view: the first local spark, and the worldwide constellation that followed.
