my name is Ellie I'm a software engineer on the spark and no sequel platform team at Bloomberg well Bloomberg is a fin tech company and we actually own and process more financial data than any other organization in the world and so scale is a really big issue at Bloomberg where technologies like spark can have a big impact we also as a company our clients rely on us for accurate information and accurate information that comes extremely fast so speed and accuracy as well I came to Bloomberg a year and a half ago knowing only Python and JavaScript and so Scala and functional programming were my entry into this world of deeper more strongly typed languages and I have really loved it because it's amazing to spend so much less time debugging having the compiler and the IDE doing that work for me has really been excellent what else can I say on that I I found that the functional programming paradigm synced really nicely with how my brain works and how I actually like to think about programming and so I've actually found it much easier to program since I started thinking about it functional I came last year and had such a blast that I knew I had to come back again this year what I really got out of the conference last year it was a great learning opportunity for me I was only about seven months into programming Scala at that point but what I really got out of last year that has endured and been such a boon to me in the year since is all of the connections that I made at this conference and having really built up a strong community for myself around Scala and around the work that I do [Music]
