[Music] hi I'm Roger Schmo paula i'm a cofounder and senior director of engineering at index where I lead the catalog and machine learning facility yeah one of the recent ones and that corresponds to the talk that I'm given is about you know how do you solve the last mile problem in machine land that is you know how do you take machine learning model is reproduction and you know we made some good progress in the last you know a few years in tracking that but I think that is there still a long way to go before it becomes completely self-serve a scientist can take models that they build and you know take them to production in a very self-service way one big issue has been you know monitoring you know think of it as a you know you when you're dealing with scale and if we don't don't have any metrics for example or monitoring you are actually flying I mean you're flying you know airplane without any without the dashboard so that's you know so one of the important things we do is you know make sure that we have enough dashboards which have our metrics and the business metrics that we care about so that we know what's going on with our systems [Music] yeah I think something you know that that will happen a lot in the future is you know everybody will be using machine learning and AI which means that you know people will be you know pushing models at scale you know training models at scale so you know what is the supporting infrastructure for this you know where you are able to train models you know within within probably minutes instead of you know days or hours and how do you push them both production you know within let's say again minutes and hours instead of days so I've built distributed systems in the past and you know one of the you know biggest benefits of function programming is immutability you know in in a world where you know multi-threading is given the fact that you know function programming takes care of these things is a big relief for you you don't have to you know no reason out nasty nasty bugs that would actually happen you know if you use code that's mutable yeah so the context is you know I you know come I've come all the way from India here so I find you know this is the best conference you know that I've attended this is my second time I find the whole community very welcoming you know I value the discussions that I have with people and I make friends every year and you know this year is not different and I'm sure I will come back again next year
