[Music] I'm Chris Phelps I'm a staff engineer at General wear in Boulder Colorado we're in smart energy I'm a platform engineer there we have a lot of issues surrounding both our analytics delivering those at scale delivering those in various products and generally making a solid product that helps our customers achieve their goals probably the biggest issues that we deal with with scale is balancing batch like workflows where things can take time to return with live real-time workflows where we need to be returning results to a user immediately the former causes load upon our system which can influence the the live users results and we want to try to balance resources in our system to be able to achieve both of these things simultaneously I think we're going to continue to have these same issues balancing batch workflows and on-demand workflows as we have more and more customers more and more products and more things that we're trying to do with our platform speaking personally I feel like functional programming helps me achieve systems that are much more composable much more easy to reason about and treat portions in isolation it allows me to build pieces assemble those pieces together into larger systems and then when I need to diagnose a problem with the system treat those pieces individually I think many of my colleagues feel the same way although we definitely have a wide variety of techniques that are used by different engineers I've really enjoyed scale by the bay over the last few years as a chance to see really excellent talks meet with excellent speakers and attendees and see friends and find out what's what's the pulse of the community lately you
