Recording: Scale By the Bay 2023: Interview with Alex Monahan.
hi I'm Alex Monahan uh I work part-time for duct Tob Labs uh doing documentation and blogging and I also work full-time for mother duck I'm a forward deployed software engineer we are exploring how we can and use AI to make a you know a data developer experience better you know writing SQL is a skill that takes some time and llms can learn it so how can we uh bring that to bear and make SQL easier to work with I think also duct DB as an engine is a very good ingredient for people building AI systems a lot of the work of AI is not necessarily the exact AI portion of it so we think dctb is a perfect fit for AI pipelines uh to really pre-process your data exactly how AI needs to to receive see it big thing going on the next year or so in dctb is we're going to have our 1.0 uh so dctb is currently um you know in our our zero dot releases and really the main thing we want to do as we go to 1.0 is to stabilize the storage format and ensure long-term backward compatibility so once you create a database database files live forever you know file formats live forever so we're taking that very seriously making sure the format is you know as as good as we can possibly make it something we'd love to live with for a long time and so 1.0 is where we're going to officially stamp and say the format is forwards and backwards compatible from here for me looking to just see what uh architectures folks are using see sort of how um you know what what's what's the overall um different approaches to things so just kind of taking a survey of a lot of different topics I think I'm also really looking forward to the hallway track as well you know meeting and and talking with a variety of folks I think that um you know there's a lot of experts here how can you learn from folks that have already have already explored what you're exploring and that's the benefit of of a conference like this is if you're dealing with data of a certain size or your problem of a certain type see who else is dealing with similar things so I think the collaboration part is my favorite
