[Music] at the scala by the bay conference i will give a talk with the title what i learned about functional programming by writing a book on it the book's title is the science of functional programming this book is completely open source it's full source code with text program examples diagrams and scripts for building pdf files it's all on github why was i motivated to write this book there are so many books now on functional programming there's functional programming for python for c spots even for php and there are functional programming books of all kinds for all audiences the reason is those books did not answer quite the questions that i had i'm a little more mathematics oriented and i wanted to have rigorous definitions and proofs no books will give me that so the book i'm writing it's almost finished is my answer to those questions another important thing i learned was that functional programming is really a very different paradigm of programming from others say from object oriented or logic programming i will talk about this in my presentation but this is an important question because today it seems that functional programming has a lot of fashion and hype but say 30 or 40 years ago people believed that block diagrams were important for programming and today we don't believe that but back then it was claimed that block diagrams give a lot of benefit is that really true for functional programming that it gives benefits so i will discuss this why we can talk about it as in a rigorous way that functional programming provides benefits another thing i learned is that functional programming because of this rigorous reasoning it brings the process of programming closer to engineering and away from trades and crafts and artisanship most people that have today the job title of software engineers actually work as artisans as trades and crafts people they do not work similarly to mechanical or electronic or chemical engineers and i will talk about this a bit finally an important question is whether you will benefit from working from through my book it's a lot of work everybody needs to decide whether this book will be beneficial so my talk will help you decide i will explain my approach i will show some examples and you will be able to make a decision i encourage you to take a look at the book in its present form but basically those are the reasons why you would may be interested in my talk and what you will get from it you
