my name's Russell Connor I'm a software developer at block stream I live in Kitchener Ontario in Canada I'm working on a new programming language for blockchains and I'm excited by it because there are unique challenges for for language design in in for blockchains we want static analysis that we can verify costs of execution and we want to be able to reason about code because when you're building smart contracts you only get one shot to get your software right I'm interested in the functional programming and thoughtful programming tract that is really up my alley because I'm interested in functional programming and formal reasoning about programming so we're going to use a proof assistant I'm going to demo my language in ACTA and we're going to actually use the system to formally verify the correctness of a functional programming in my language I'm hoping to pick up some techniques novel abstractions this is where really functional programming excels and then the ability to create functional programming abstractions that that work very well and are not very leaky compared to other languages well congratulations Scala I'm a Haskell programmer myself so a happy birthday but I see you know regardless of the function programming language you use I see it having a big effect in the future from from my point of view we're looking at using dependently typed programming languages which unify both programming and logical reasoning into a single language that can do both and it allows you to leverage both the programming language in your reasoning and of course reasoning about the programs you're writing and they really build on each other so I'm looking forward to that in the future there are a lot of new people to meet over here and yeah I'm just enjoying the company that that's around here you
