my name's Joe Koch Maura I work for Symbian and I'm a software engineer out of New York City for me it's the programming track mostly because it's been focused a lot on functional programming and that's what I do day to day at my job I think generally I'm just hoping to learn general-purpose best practices in the industries see how functional programming is kind of evolving now that more people are doing it how people are applying it in different programming languages and different paradigms specifically some of the stuff that's been talked about with respect to rust this is something that I wanted to follow up on personally to see how better programming practices can be applied through programming languages it like a system level so Scala is kind of interesting for me because I came from doing Haskell in my free time and then writing a little bit of Scala for work for a very brief period of time and then transitioning jobs and then writing Haskell full-time again and for me I think Scala was really impactful because it showed me that I could have a maybe easier way to get people on board with functional programming in a context that they were already comfortable and familiar with without having them have to kind of go back to first principles learn it from scratch I still a there's a lot to be gained out of the first principles approach that's how I encourage most people to learn functional programming but a Scala was really interesting because you could kind of meet halfway and then start changing or start changing the way that people think about programming I think one of my favorite things has been meeting people that I have sort of spoken with online in different communities and actually kind of getting to connect with them face-to-face and learn about how they go about doing their jobs how they kind of like you know what their personal and professional interests are and so I think actually meeting people in the community and putting a face to a name or an online persona it's been really really great here so far you
