Recording: Scale By The Bay 2018: Jeff Fenchel Interview
sure hello my name is Jeff I'm a senior software engineer at Sigma labs and I work here in San Francisco we're building a way for organizations to understand the media landscape to basically understand what people are saying about them in real-time what I really like about this is it allows organizations to be better citizens and be more accountable to us so they can help make the world a better place with us for me I'm all about data essentially has trying to understand the media landscape there's a ton of things going on all at the same time a million different conversations happening for me it's really exciting to try to build insights around this and break down these conversations and is something that's understandable and you can kind of understand what are the different streams or ideas that people are talking about and how are these affecting people's everyday lives so I'm gonna be talking about essentially data pipelines and machine learning and how we can kind of create pipelines that enable us to go back and continuously improve our systems going forward as well as have high observe abilities so we can understand how well they're doing at any point in time and even see if they degrade over time and become less effective I really I'm excited to kind of see all the recent advances around streaming technology and functional programming and see how essentially we can push more of the correctness aspects into your compile time rather than facing these issues at runtime all our applications are serving production and level tasks so for me I started writing Java maybe six years ago and tears into that I switched to Scala Scala was amazing in the sense that it got rid of a lot of boilerplate code and it's concurrency primitives were simply phenomenal compared to the other languages it allowed me to write more scalable code as we could leverage some of these modern frameworks that are built on top of Scala definitely basically everything I really enjoyed the kind of fireside chat yesterday where we started talking about like micro services and where they're appropriate but even it's fun to see just the ton of different aspects that come together here at scale by the bay a lot of different perspectives kind of meet to discuss what's happening around technology
