you so my name is Rob Norris I work for the Gemini 8 meter observatory and I write software that helps scientists do science on these big telescopes I've always been interested in functional programming and I was a Java developer for for many years I'm when scala around scala 28 i started paying attention and doing more and more on the side and then eventually started using it at work I've been doing Scala since whenever 29 came came out I've been doing that full-time mostly self-taught but then I got involved online i got an IRC and started talking to people like Tony Morris runerby arneson sort of the first generation of people who started due to do functional programming in Scala and I learned a lot from them and I've kept going in that direction my ideal stack is a purely functional might well my ideal stack has functions and my ideal set of libraries to use our libraries the support functional programming and have good compositional properties and that is largely what we are using at the observatory for our Scala code we have a lot of legacy Java code that's not like that but we're able to separate that out and the stuff we're doing in Scala is for the most part purely functional I was really looking forward to hearing some talks about up talked about what some people are doing with functional programming jhanda goes talking about co free craig file talking about matreshka because they're doing some things that are similar to some work that I'm doing so I was really looking forward to those [Music]
