an American and um a German guy and an Irish guy are getting executed and uh so they have uh they all get granted one last wish and so the um American guy says, "Okay, I would like to have a very big steak and a very good glass of red wine. And the German guy says, "Okay, my last wish is I want to deliver a speech." And then everybody goes to the Irish guy and says, "Okay, what's um your last wish?" And the Irish guy says, "Can you please kill me before the German delivers the speech?" So, my name is Roland. I'm German. you're in for a treat. Um, and I'm the vice president, um, I'm the vice president engineering at Nitro. And I am a lucky guy. And I am a lucky guy because, uh, for whatever reason over the last 25 years in my career, I uh have ended up in a lot of cases at the right time in the right place. 25 years ago, I was with electronic data systems
Yeah. and have built and actually built one of the first client server bill of material systems that were based on a relational database. Uh I built that system for General Motors and the name of the company that provided the database was uh relational technologies incorporated out of Alama here in um in San Francisco. That was actually the first time in my life that I was in San Francisco. Very good memories about that. And um if you can tell me what the name of the database is that was actually built by Relational Technologies Incorporated. I have this very cool Nitro USB sticks. Yeah, it's Nope
Not even close. Yep. So, so I was ready to say you can uh come to me afterwards and I give you one of these. So if people have not heard that then you can come and see me afterwards. Uh it's a collector's item and it's a b it's a bottle opener. Coming back to what uh um what Alexi was saying it's a bottle opener. So uh you can put it to good use um after 6:00 I would I would assume. Yeah
So uh 25 years ago I was with EDS. 15 years ago I was with Iona technologies again very interesting and built a lot of large scale distributed SOA systems based on coraar soap rest and uh was building these systems when people had actually no clue how let's say what so really is yeah five years ago I was with the guild group and um built and deployed the first um microservices uh one of the like first big microservices systems in the industry with more than 300 microservices. Today, Guild is running 450 microservices and right now I am with Nitro and uh at Nitro we are at the forefront to figure out how to use data engineering and machine learning and um natural language processing to unlock the value that is in the documents, make the documents smarter and bring that value to our customers. Yeah. So I am lucky again. Yeah. Um the um um but you can you can think about this and you can talk about this um let's say any way you like. Yeah
Um and um people have said people have said that um software is going to eat the world. People Mark Andre has said software is going to eat the world. But I'm right now probably not the only one who is saying that that's not true anymore. And uh what's maybe more true or it's becoming more true uh by the day is that um data or ex having access to the right kind of data and the ability to process that data and generate um insights for the customers and for for for for the company that ability is going to eat the world. So, two weeks ago, the CEO of um just to maybe reiterate that point, two weeks ago, the CEO of Google, Sand Py, uh was actually saying, and I'm paraphrasing a little bit, mobile first was yesterday, AI is tomorrow. And two months ago, as some of you might have heard or let's say um you might be aware, uh two months ago, um Deep Minds Alpha Go um was um uh Deep Minds Alpha Go uh actually beat the um uh one of the three best players in Go in the world. Yeah. So that was not supposed to happen for another 10 years or so
Yeah. Um so you don't have to be a genius to realize that something big is about to happen. Yeah. And um in my case I was uh always lucky uh to be surrounded by let's say extremely passionate and extremely talented engineers who might not have all of the answers. Yeah. But who were totally committed and determined to figure it out. Yeah. And um today I'm here today I'm here with all of you
So I'm lucky again and um um because I think that this is the right time and the right place to figure this data machine learning artificial intelligence thing out in Ireland. Um, you would probably say that um, uh, that I'm pretty sure that in the next that the next five days are not going to be bad. Yeah, they are not going to be bad at all. Yeah, but I can translate that into American English. Yeah, American English u um is um I am actually convinced that the next five days are going to be awesome. So um thanks for being here. Welcome again and um enjoy the conference. [Applause]
