all right welcome everybody welcome to the first through thing trust conference held here in Amsterdam however everybody feeling how is everybody really feeling all right so we have a full day ahead of us we're gonna be moving strictly along the schedule we have a lot of fantastic presentations from I think some of the best Enterprise Boxey and engineering leaders around the world so we'll we'll stick to the schedule everybody should have a program we'll have some breaks and I'm gonna say a few words about this conference about what we want to achieve today I think we're making history because I think we really have a different kind of conference today I don't think a similar conference was held in the blockchain space and I'll explain why and I think you know everybody will come home enlightened and learn things and meet each other we really hope folks will connect we want you to make sure that everybody who is here you can hear the presentations who have sponsor area networking area behind the curtain the curtain is not reach into the ceiling it's a wonderful building so if you want to carry conversations we've have this whole second floor if you see the curtains on the second floor there are multiple small rooms which are available to all of us the workshop tract is behind the screen on the second floor there are stairs on the both sides of the building you can use this there's to ascend to the second floor and go to all the rooms so there's bunch of meeting rooms if you guys want to carry business conversations external users to conversations please go for the party following the panels so you'll have plenty of time to connect so welcome again my name is Alexey Krylov I'm the founder of by the bay conference series held for six years already in San Francisco Bay Area in the think Trust is basically first conference in in Europe so I'm super excited I've been here you know a lot of times as a visitor I am super excited to bring this engineering event here and I want to thank the corgin eyes errs companies intellect soft and perfectas who help in this they are great developing companies they work in the blockchain space they delivered projects they signed globally unknown clients who do blockchain so I want to thank their teams they are out outside with the sponsor booths they also speak in the program so make sure you talk to them I want to thank all the sponsors who made this possible IBM as the host sponsor it supports our conferences in san francisco bay area especially in the engineering and developer oriented events so let me tell you a little bit about the kind of the way we schedule structure this conferences so so I've been running meetups for about seven years whoo-hoo here goes to meetups okay who goes in to engineering meetups great right so you guys know how this works so in I think I'm serum is one of the global cities where this movement took hold where people basically learn what they need through themselves right they don't teach this stuff in school there is no Department of blockchain right there is no chairs of watching that it's very hard to reconcile claims if you have you know claim that Evo's is better than Cardano there is no authority who can resolve it for you you have to trust people who work in the space you have to learn and you have to basically have a gut feeling you have to learn theory you have to learn cryptography have to learn software engineering but beyond that you need to learn business so we are a thing in really unique confluence of multiple skills but if you look at the underpinnings of this it is the engineering which runs everything a lot of people don't understand that there is no tokens token as a transaction continued in the previous transaction talking is a difference between two transactions which means that you have to have a distributed system which keeps nice to keep going right and so a very simple way to see you know ascertain whether a company has the guts and wherewithal to continue building block changes to ask do you guys can you maintain distributed systems do you have experience have you been paged in the night to fix something right so I think it's very important that we pay attention to that side of the business which which is often overlooked so you need to you need to look for engineering excellence you need to look for companies which bring established software engineer expertise which which know how to build secure systems by design performance systems and a lot of these companies for instance use Haskell and Scala or a camel for a reason right because functional programming allows you to formally verify and prove that certain things are true so that's another aspect we're paying attention here we have folks like Edina and Topol with our gold sponsor who develop in this languages we have workshops to to explain why it is important to to pay attention right to to the tools see use and the the topic of this conference is trust it actually started as rethink money in 2016 and I thought about it right and through the years we talked to multiple folks and the focus shifted to trust for many reasons so one of the reason is we have folks were not directly involved into in in the financial sphere with our folks doing IOT who is doing energy who is interesting idea right we have some functionality who is interested in energy energy trading right so we have people from multiple who is interested in in for instance DNA and not folks who are doing bioinformatics right so we have companies which want to store genetic data and so they're not directly in financial space they essentially use blockchain for trust and and so trust because they're kind of the theme of this conference and when we think about it blockchain is really not the end right blockchain is the mean to an end and the means usually solving a problem of trust and so if you look at the program we have folks representing consortium such as harbor larger set of tools such as with trade transit IOT and energy web and issue these consortiums came together to solve an efficiency problem which is distinct from anything discussed in the IC or topics rod there is already a very clear and existent problem of trust which involves middleman which involves transparency so so blockchain is focusing on basically removing metal man removing hurdles improving efficiency and solving existing problems so that's another key focus of this conference we we want to identify what our actual use cases we're already blockchains are making an impact and we're very fortunate to have some of the top enterprises we have IBM and G and Bosch and Oracle who already made inroads in this so there are specific use cases yesterday was that the blockchain expert and I learned about the Tesla study which IBM did with Dutch and European energy companies which allows test owners to disconnect from the grid and be rewarded that they are not using electricity during the high peak periods and they reduced volatility and the only way really to verify that you know this multiple stakeholders are satisfied to put everything on blockchain so the rewards can be given out justly so I think I'm super excited we really have specific enterprise use cases which are already proving how this technology can be deployed on that the price side reaching consumers putting together companies and solving actual problems another philosophical theme of this conference which I want to kind of challenge with is how blockchain and finance makes data in the blockchain really advanced really most valuable data and if you think about it we're an answer that which is the cradle of FinTech innovation so you know a lot of you guys how many people here from actually from from Amsterdam or from Netherlands right how how many people came from other European countries how many people came from United States or other continents okay a few right so mostly Europeans here but you know you know right there novels were the first decentralized country and its finance system was also decentralized and obviously it was a cooperative country we had to build all the levees and dams together so there are multiple kind of prerequisites in the national psyche in the climate for the support of the blockchain and go in innovation but also I think that very interesting thing which happened here is money became information right money used to be gold and intangible assets but when trading occurs so here and Italy and Venice and Genoa people had to basically estimate what are the prices of goods they have to buy in the future what are the risks right in order to grip a ship and send it across the seas you need to put together a consortium of merchants and capitalists you need to invest in this you need to ascertain what is the projected profit and in basically the hedge the risk so insurance was born exchanges were born derivatives right so Amsterdam used to be the cradle of financial innovation and I think at some point right there was no Silicon Valley this was the center of FinTech innovation and technology innovation and so what happened later the focus shifted to San Franciscan Seattle where new tools were developed right and so now data is used by Google Microsoft Amazon we're used to work is basically the most valuable thing because amazon knows everything about you and it's going to use it to its advantage however with a blockchain we have now the power we have the technology to give it back to to multiple stakeholders right so I think the really interesting challenge for all of us is how do we make boxing data the most valuable data for business and I think this really is distinct from the focus you hear in the IC o---- topics right because really a lot of businesses cases they involve putting data itself in the blockchain or putting data in the cloud in such a way that it is permissioned and validated by the blockchain and so we already see versus genomic companies who want to make not just your genome accessible to others as a whole but may be regions of your genome to be accessible to pharma companies right and you can selectively say I'm concerned about this illness which I have my dad had or my granddad and I want you guys to check whether I'm susceptible to this illness I want you to proactively treat me so you can selectively give former companies a region of your DNA and we already have folks from genetics who develop this technology and there are multiple challenges because genomic data is nothing like transaction data right it's a it's a pretty long and big sequence so you need to think how the you know you're going to compress it how you're going to store it and obviously you never want to lose it right because once it's gone it's gone so so there is a whole bunch of challenges we are so in here and and so invite everybody to to challenge themselves to kind of understand what are the verticals which will make the most impact what are the technologies engineering approaches underpinning this which can make it the most viable and efficient implementation for these business solutions and basically the whole day if you look at it is structure to answer these questions if you are interested in kind of engineering approaches my main conference called scale while by the way is held in November it's it's basically this country's x six it's three tracks functional programming reactive micro services and data pipelines with machine learning and AI it's held at Twitter headquarters in November November 15th to 17th in San Francisco the call for papers actually still open until tomorrow if you want to submit a talk if you have really amazing talk you should submit it anyways and and at that conference we will have very specific between engineering track with several companies who didn't make it here including Definity symbiont constellation as all of these companies are developing blockchains we Scala Haskell function programming all of them are solving business cases and provide specific high throughput reliable solutions so and but that in that context we're going to talk specifically about engineering we're gonna show code on slides we're not going to show call probably much today right we're really synergistic with business use cases but if you are digging engineering you should definitely make sure you come to scale by the bay in November it's it's gonna be fun and if you like this conference breaks so with that I will introduce our first keynote speaker we are very fortunate to have IBM as our major supporter and we have Chris Faris who is the CTO of IBM open technology he is the chair of the technical steering committee of the hyper ledger foundation and as you know hyper legend is one of the Linux Foundation project so it's it's a it's a group of multiple stakeholders and we're very fortunate that we kin sided with IBM hackfest which Chris ran from from 27th and some of us when they learned about Apple I think it's really great project so with that the CRISPR second way
