I'm Scott Waterman and i'm the founder of back quote this is great community of people you see all these folks online writing papers delivering systems building stuff but to see people in person and get a chance to talk with them and see what they're up to you get a much deeper sense of what's happening with the community and much stronger ties to people one of the reasons that the data specifically text is so exciting for me is that the compute power if the world is growing so rapidly this stuff is not static anymore it's not sitting in a file or on a whiteboard or under some statisticians nervous i but with the computation attached to the data there's so much that we can learn and know and the smart machines just reveal so much about the world we could never see before so I spoke about how text is not just data but it's actually a technology it's the original technology of humans it's something we create invent and reinvent and it's changing all the time so texts today with computing machines and the web and search engines that can grind it all up together and give you new insights and new connections is a very different thing than what we all grew up with reading on static paper that it doesn't change there's a new dynamic to the this fundamental piece of what makes us human well the only way to be a good scientist or a good engineer is just to be curious take something apart put it back together try to make it do something new try to make it still work whether that's the computing system whether that's analyzing a data set whether thats collecting a data set because there's something you need to observe that nobody else is collected it's just that curiosity of what makes this tick and how does it fit together that really is the core of science and engineering you
