[Music] my name is Lawrence crow deskah on the founder and CEO of civic makers or civic innovation studio based here in San Francisco that serves agencies and nonprofits and civic startups I'm pretty excited to talk to data scientists and technologists in general about the importance of co discovery of problems for users and that's working directly with users understand what they're going through so that we can develop better real-world human-oriented problems in our products and our technology data is pretty cool because it's really the hidden currency of our cities so much of the operation of our cities can be explained in a way in data but it's not something that the normal citizen or everyday citizen sees so the exposing how cities work by better visualizing data I think is a huge opportunity for civic engagement I think the main insight is that we can all be doing more to solve the problems we see every day and it could be the technology to developing it could be the way we volunteer with our skills but it's really important if we hope to live and work and raise families and better communities that we take the responsibility to be involved [Music] well I couldn't speak too much to being a data scientist because I am a web generalist but i would say a great way to get started is just explore the open data sets that the city of san francisco has released data SFO org and explorer what departments are doing and what they need help with and it's a really great starter learning opportunity for for data science you [Music]
