my name is Dmitri Gusev I'm an associate professor of computer information technology at Purdue University in Indiana that's exciting to meet this newly formed community of data for democracy a conference with in data by the bay a fascinating grid of conferences here and meet people who also care about similar issues how the modern technology including data science and computer information technology can help people get their local issues solved and perhaps even some global issues data may seem overwhelming but nowadays the techniques for processing data are becoming more advanced with natural language processing and the other AI techniques helping us make sense of the data and visualization techniques helping us further to visualize the data so that we can deliver this understanding of the data to more people and hopefully lead to decisions that would improve things in our life the main insight is that even for some problems of global significance it is still important for people to be accurately aware of them and work together to get those problems salt if you want to become a data scientist I certainly advise to follow the approach of my former student corium Shire who is now a data science graduate student at Indiana University Bloomington he's our graduate from computer information technology at Purdue University and the approach is work on a variety of data science problems that interest you from Wednesday standpoint or another and by doing so learn the different techniques that are available to solve these problems and look to extend those techniques and come up with your own novel approaches that would then reach the community and help us enrich our knowledge on how to deal with the data you
