[Music] artificial intelligence is the problem of giving computers to make decisions on topics where we haven't already prepared them with the answer specific to self-driving cars artificial intelligence helps self-driving cars go out into the world and figure out how to navigate the environment based on changing conditions and routes that may be different than the routes that they were trained on and problems that appear that may not be foreseen but that they have learned how to deal with through training on lots of different types of data AI has been really successful with rule-based robotics algorithms a lot of the autonomous vehicles that are on the world be act the lot of the autonomous vehicles that are on the streets being tested today are built with the types of robotics algorithms that have been developed over the last 20 years that say in this situation do this in another situation do something else what is really exciting about artificial intelligence coming up over the next five years is machine learning and in particular deep learning and the idea of using data to train cars to behave in unpredictable scenarios so before we would have lots of rules that interactive in lots of complicated ways that would guide a car as far as how to steer and when to hit the brakes and how fast to go what we're seeing a lot more of now is gathering data from human drivers and other data about what the world looks like and using that to train a computer to drive the car in all sorts of environments that we never could have foreseen the rules for that keeps me up at night it Udacity we train software engineers to work on autonomous vehicles this is really exciting but it's also really hard because this is a really deep complex space and we are working really hard to teach students exactly what they need to know to be qualified and great candidates for the jobs that they would like to get and so we spend a lot of time thinking about what is the best way to communicate all of the complexities of artificial intelligence and machine learning to students so that they are able to do really neat things with the knowledge that they've gained and be able to go in and show employers that they can contribute immediately on autonomous vehicle teams my favorite part about the conference is just all of the people who are here who are so excited about artificial intelligence and especially today's session on self-driving cars I've just talked to so many different people who are super enthusiastic about working in autonomous vehicles or they're already starting a company related to self-driving cars and I think just to have all of these people together to kind of feed off each other and learn from each other and get the latest information about what's happening in the field is a tremendous opportunity and it's one of those things that leaves me walking away really really energized about the field and the potential for the people here to transform the world you
