Synchronizing/updating local client notes with annotations previously made by other clients in a notes database

A system for collaborative document annotation whereby notes associated with a document, such as an image or text document, are stored in a notes database on a central notes server. Documents and annotations are kept in separate data structures; a web server application captures client requests to create, store, edit and retrieve annotations, and a synchronization process propagates them between clients.
