System and method for transmitting a digital image over a communication network

An image streaming system that eliminates the necessity to store a compressed version of the original image by streaming region-of-interest (ROI) data from the original stored image. Once a user wishes to interact with a remote image the server performs a fast preprocessing step, then runs a progressive image encoding algorithm only for the requested ROI.
