The geometry of the resulting spacetime is highly inhomogeneous on scales of many Hubble sizes. The recently developed string-theoretic picture of the "landscape" presents a similar structure, where an infinite number of de Sitter, flat, and anti-de Sitter universes are nucleated via quantum tunneling. Since observers on the Earth have no information about their location within the eternally inflating universe, the main question in this context is to obtain statistical predictions for quantities observed at a random location. I describe the problems arising within this statistical framework, such as the need for a volume cutoff and the dependence of cutoff schemes on time slicing and on the initial conditions. After reviewing different approaches and mathematical techniques developed in the past two decades for studying these issues, I discuss the existing proposals for extracting predictions and give examples of their applications.

arXiv physics/0611177 · 47 citations · Source: semantic-scholarWhile there is ample evidence that social and communication networks play a key role during the spread of new ideas, products, or services, network effects are expected to have diminished influence in the stationary state, when all users are aware of the innovation, and its usage pattern is determined mainly by its utility to the user. Here we study four mobile phone-based services available to over six million subscribers, allowing us to simultaneously monitor the communication network between individuals and the time-resolved service usage patterns. We find that usage highly correlates with the structure of the communication network, and demonstrate the coexistence on the same social network of two distinct usage classes, network effects being responsible for the quantifiable differences between them. To test the predictive power of our theory, we demonstrate that traditional marketing techniques are ineffective in permanently boosting service adoption, and propose a hub-based incentive mechanism that has the potential to enhance usage for one of the two service classes.

EPAC 2006 (SLAC-PUB) · 16 citations · Source: openalex+ostiThis paper presents the advances in electromagnetic (EM) field computation that have been enabled by the US DOE SciDAC Accelerator Science and Technology project which supports the development and application of a suite of electromagnetic codes based on the higher-order finite element method. Implemented on distributed memory supercomputers, this state of the art simulation capability has produced results which are of great interest to accelerator designers and with realism previously not possible with standard codes. Examples from work on the International Linear Collider (ILC) project are described.
