ECML 2007 · DOI 10.1007/978-3-540-74958-5_5 · 92 citations · Source: semantic-scholar+dblpStatistical debugging uses machine learning to model program failures and help identify root causes of bugs. We approach this task using a novel Delta-Latent-Dirichlet-Allocation model. We model execution traces attributed to failed runs of a program as being generated by two types of latent topics: normal usage topics and bug topics. Execution traces attributed to successful runs of the same program, however, are modeled by usage topics only. Joint modeling of both kinds of traces allows us to identify weak bug topics that would otherwise remain undetected. We perform model inference with collapsed Gibbs sampling. In quantitative evaluations on four real programs, our model produces bug topics highly correlated to the true bugs, as measured by the Rand index. Qualitative evaluation by domain experts suggests that our model outperforms existing statistical methods for bug cause identification, and may help support other software tasks not addressed by earlier models.

arXiv · arXiv 0706.3060 · Source: arxiv+semantic-scholarCommercial graphics processors (GPUs) have high compute capacity at very low cost, which makes them attractive for general purpose scientific computing. In this paper we show how graphics processors can be used for N-body simulations to obtain improvements in performance over current generation CPUs. We have developed a highly optimized algorithm for performing the O(N^2) force calculations that constitute the major part of stellar and molecular dynamics simulations. In some of the calculations, we achieve sustained performance of nearly 100 GFlops on an ATI X1900XTX. The performance on GPUs is comparable to specialized processors such as GRAPE-6A and MDGRAPE-3, but at a fraction of the cost. Furthermore, the wide availability of GPUs has significant implications for cluster computing and distributed computing efforts like Folding@Home.

MPOOL 2007 (Multiparadigm Programming with OO Languages) · 12 citations · Source: openalexGenerics are a very popular feature of contemporary OO languages, such as Java, C # or Scala. Their support for genericity is lacking, however. The problem is that they only support abstracting over proper types, and not over generic types. This limitation makes it impossible to, e.g., define a precise interface for Iterable, a core abstraction in Scala’s collection API. We implemented “type constructor polymorphism” in Scala 2.5, which solves this problem at the root, thus greatly reducing the duplication of type signatures and code.
