DOI 10.1109/sdg.2009.5071336 · 28 citations · Source: openalexEffective governance of agile software teams is challenging but required to enable wide adoption of agile methodologies, in particular for large-scale projects. In this paper we apply a full lifecycle governance model to agile projects, focused on the iteration level. The concept is demonstrated via a case study of a large-scale, enterprise-critical software project that implemented agile practices. We analyze three governance events, including the metrics that triggered the event, the decisions taken and the followup to ensure resolution. We conclude that governance iterations can be naturally unified with agile development iterations, resulting in a lean governance mechanism that identifies and resolves issues in an effective and timely manner.

The toolset then provides test editors, versioning, validation, reporting and hyperlinks across models - in addition to enabling automated test execution. This case study evaluates the effectiveness of such a solution as perceived by two teams of professional testers, who used it to test several products over a two year period. The results suggest that in addition to the expected benefits of automation, the solution reduces the time and effort required to write tests, maintain tests and plan the test authoring and execution efforts - at the expense of requiring longer training and a higher bar for recruiting testers.

Each robot senses its surroundings and acts independently without central coordination or communication with other robots. Our approach uses both the current position and the velocity of other robots to predict their future trajectory in order to avoid collisions. Moreover, our approach is reciprocal and avoids oscillations by explicitly taking into account that the other robots also sense their surroundings and change their trajectories accordingly. We build on prior work related to velocity obstacles and reciprocal velocity obstacles and introduce the concept of hybrid reciprocal velocity obstacles for collision avoidance that takes into account the kinematics of the robots and uncertainty in sensor data. We apply our approach to a set of iRobot Create robots using centralized sensing and show natural, direct, and collision-free navigation in several challenging scenarios.

We present an approach to identify controls that will lead to a collision with a moving obstacle at some point in the future. Our approach generalizes the concept of velocity obstacles, which have been used for navigation among dynamic obstacles, and takes into account the constraints of a car-like robot. We use this formulation to find controls that will allow collision free navigation in dynamic environments. Finally, we demonstrate the performance of our algorithm on a simulated car-like robot among moving obstacles.

ConvNets have a feed-forward architecture consisting of multiple linear convolution filters interspersed with point-wise non-linear squashing functions. This paper presents an efficient implementation of ConvNets on a low-end DSP-oriented Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The implementation exploits the inherent parallelism of ConvNets and takes full advantage of multiple hardware multiply-accumulate units on the FPGA. The entire system uses a single FPGA with an external memory module, and no extra parts. A network compiler software was implemented, which takes a description of a trained ConvNet and compiles it into a sequence of instructions for the ConvNet Processor (CNP). A ConvNet face detection system was implemented and tested. Face detection on a 512 × 384 frame takes 100ms (10 frames per second), which corresponds to an average performance of 3.4×109 connections per second for this 340 million connection network. The design can be used for low-power, lightweight embedded vision systems for micro-UAVs and other small robots.

These systems focus on leveraging the real life relationships of people and augment them with the facilities and the richness of the Web. The large number of social applications and the even larger user populations of these social networks are proving that this new class of software is useful and complements modern life. However, social platforms and software are not without drawbacks and significant concerns. One of the most important considerations is the need to allow strong security and privacy protections. In addition, these protections need to be easy to use and apply uniformly across platforms and applications. While most of the leading social platforms have primitives for providing privacy in the platform and the applications, we argue that they are insufficient. In particular, the privacy primitives lack ease of use, are too plentiful, do not fully apply to third party applications, and do not take full advantage of the social graphs that users implicitly build on these platforms. This paper provides a first step in resolving these issues.

SLAC’s Advanced Computations Department (ACD) has developed the parallel 3D electromagnetic time-domain code T3P for simulations of wakefields and transients in complex accelerator structures. T3P is based on state-of-the-art Finite Element methods on unstructured grids and features unconditional stability, quadratic surface approximation and up to 6 th-order vector basis functions for unprecedented simulation accuracy. Optimized for large-scale parallel processing on leadership supercomputing facilities, T3P allows simulations of realistic 3D structures with fast turn-around times, aiding the design of the next generation of accelerator facilities. Applications include simulations of the proposed two-beam accelerator structures for the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) – wakefield damping in the Power Extraction and Transfer Structure (PETS) and power transfer to the main beam accelerating structures are investigated. 1.
