This paper introduces Extensible Algebraic Datatypes with defaults, which promote a simple programming pattern to solve this well-known problem. We show that it is possible to encode extensible algebraic datatypes in an object-oriented language, using a new design pattern for extensible visitors. Extensible algebraic datatypes have been successfully applied in the implementation of an extensible Java compiler. Our technique allows for the reuse of existing components in compiler extensions without the need for any adaptations.

This paper presents a novel variation, type-indexed rows, in which labels are discarded and elements are indexed by their type alone. The calculus, λTIR, can express tuples, recursive datatypes, monomorphic records, polymorphic extensible records, and closed-world style type-based overloading. Our motivating application of λTIR, however, is to encode the "choice" types of XML, and the "unordered tuple" types of SGML. Indeed, λTIR is the kernel of the language XMλ, a lazy functional language with direct support for XML types ("DTDs") and terms ("documents").The system is built from rows, equality constraints, insertion constraints and constrained, or qualified, parametric polymorphism. The test for constraint satisfaction is complete, and for constraint entailment is only mildly incomplete. We present a type checking algorithm, and show how λTIR may be implemented by a type-directed translation which replaces type-indexing by conventional natural-number indexing. Though not presented in this paper, we have also developed a constraint simplification algorithm and type inference system.

Local type inference determines types by a combination of type propagation and local constraint solving, rather than by global constraint solving. We refine the previously existing local type inference system of Pierce and Turner[PT98] by allowing partial type information to be propagated. This is expressed by coloring types to indicate propagation directions. Propagating partial type information allows us to omit type annotations for the visitor pattern, the analogue of pattern matching in languages without sum types.

I explore the fractal geometry of the resulting spacetime, using coordinate-independent quantities. The formalism of stochastic inflation can be used to obtain the fractal dimension of the set of eternally inflating points (the ``eternal fractal''). I also derive a nonlinear branching diffusion equation describing global properties of the eternal set and the probability to realize eternal inflation. I show gauge invariance of the condition for presence of eternal inflation. Finally, I consider the question of whether all thermalized regions merge into one connected domain. Fractal dimension of the eternal set provides a (weak) sufficient condition for merging.

We show that kinetic helicity at last scattering leads to temperature-polarization correlations ($C_l^{TB}$ and $C_l^{EB}$) in the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) and calculate the magnitude of the effect. Helical primordial magnetic fields, expected from cosmic events such as electroweak baryogenesis, can lead to helical velocity flows and hence to non-vanishing correlations of the temperature and B-type polarization. However we show that the magnitude of the induced helical flow is unobservably small because the helical component of a magnetic field is almost force-free. We discuss an alternate scheme for extracting the helicity of a stochastically homogeneous and isotropic primordial magnetic field using observations of the CMBR. The scheme involves constructing Faraday rotation measure maps of the CMBR and thus determining the sum of the helical and non-helical components of the primordial magnetic field. The power spectrum of B-type polarization fluctuations, on the other hand, are sensitive only to the non-helical component of the primordial magnetic field. The primordial magnetic helicity can then be derived by combining these two sets of observations.

The method does not use CMB sky maps and requires moderate computational power. As a first implementation, we apply our method to a recently proposed model of simulated cosmic strings and estimate the observability of the non-Gaussian bispectrum signal. A comparison with the cosmic variance of the bispectrum estimator shows that the bispectrum for the simulated string model we used is not observable.

We then focus on cosmic strings based models and discuss their status in the light of current high-resolution observations from the BOOMERanG, MAXIMA and DASI collaborations. Upcoming megapixel experiments will have the potential to look for non-Gaussian features in the CMB temperature maps with unprecedented accuracy. We therefore devote the last part of this review to treat the non-Gaussianity of the microwave background and present a method for computation of the bispectrum from simulated string realizations.
